Ricks project AE85 (Back together with dyno results)
Hi I am a new member and this is my project car.
I couldnt afford to pay the overinflated prices for a AE86 so I ended up with a AE85 as my project car.. When my AE-85 is finally finished it will be used on the road as well as used for tarmac track racing, hillclimbs etc.. nothing to serious but just for a bit of fun. Currently I am test fitting every thing first, then the car will be stripped down again and painted and reassembled. The Motor, gearbox, diff, front and rear suspension, rollcage have been installed, there is tones more to do but the next step is to sort out the rear guards requiring some sort of flare or body kit. A few Details so far (I will try and keep updated): Powertrain AE101 4AGZE supercharged motor 2 1/4 exhaust system Subaru water to air intercooler Hilux diff, LSD Supra gearbox Custom bellhousing Custom single piece drive shaft. TRD Engine mounts Suspension: MA61 supra front struts MA61 supra front disk brakes AE92 levin/trueno rear disk brakes TRD race springs Tokico Adjustable shocks all round Whiteline front adjustable swaybar Whiteline rear adjustable swaybar Whiteline adjustable panhard rod Whiteline adjustable trailing arms Adjustable caster arms Adjustable camber plates Custom NRCA's Traction brackets New bushes all round Wheels and tires: 15x6.5 Fortran? rims for now. Body: 8 piont roll cage Rear shock absorber tower brace TRD wing/fiberglass hatch Fiberglass rear guards This how she looked when I first I bought it back in 2004, stock standard Within the first few weeks of owning it I started to strip it down and began work on the removel of the rust. Which I took my time with as I have seen so many rust repair jobs done poorly with rust repairing in a matter of months. Just before it went away to get the rollcage fitted This is after I got it back from getting the rollcage installed, I was very impressed with the quality of workmanship. I bar that I added in myself (between the rear shock towers) This is the motor I will be using 4agze out of a AE-101 I will be keeping the supercharger on it and will be running the factory ECU, but I am going to rearange the intake setup to make it flow abit better (hopefully) using a big port rwd intake manifold. 4AGZE bolted to W55 with custom belhousing Cutting mounts off the AE85 diff Positioning AE85 mounts onto hilux diff. Hilux diff with AE-85 mounts welded on. Maching down axle and getting ready to Re-stud axles Test fitting the diff once it had been painted Custom made gearbox crossmember using factory W55 rubber mount Shortened MA61 struts with TRD race springs, tokico shocks, adjustable camber plates. Supra brakes with custom NRCA (Negative Roll Centre Adjusted) fitted. After market fan mounted onto (cough) honda integra radiator, twin core. I planed on mounting the race seats onto the factory rails but because I am a tall bugger my head was hitting the roof and that was without a helmet on, so new seat mounting points were made, they sit much lower and further back. Sorting out the fuel surge tank setup in a mock up cardboard box. Box all welded up, ready for the goodies to go in. Goodies in place and sitting in car. Facet lift pump, bosch 910 main pump. Making new stainless lines to go into fuel tank Test fitting motor Making up brackets for the intercooler, radiator brackets etc.. Subaru water to air intercooler setup: Engine cross member painted and steering rack rebuilt, new swaybar along with new bushes fitted all round. Test fitting/mounting fibreglass rear guards Corolla Levin SR 1984 AE-85 (Project car) Corolla Runx Z 2002 (Runabout) |

Very nice project.
In other words: your AE85 is becoming an AE86 after the rebuild. Are you going to put N2 flares up front as well? 1983 - AE86 Sprinter Trueno - import project 2013 - Honda Civic sport - daily driver 2004 - AEU86 dot ORG - daily domain Support our forum, buy from the AEU86 shop: |

The hilux diff is pracitcally indestructible johnny.. that'sthe main advantage. Should you manage to destroy it, the 7 inch ring and pinions are available a lot cheaper than the regular 6.7 stuff since all the off-road (r&p killing) people have ensured a bigger aftermarket. That way you can get american made r&p's, which are usually a lotcheaper than the japanese counterparts.

johnny_and Wrote:Hi There As said above they are pretty much indestructible, plus an AE86 lsd rear ends are around $1000 NZD to buy here, wont handle as much power etc etc.. The supra gearbox and hilux diff combination, is a good one, a fair few AE86 owers here use this type of setup in there drift cars where they cop heaps of abuse like clutch kicks etc. banpei Wrote:Very nice project. Sort of, if anything it should be better than a factory AE86 (dont hit me  ) At this stage it will only have rear flares.. Elid Wrote:man this car is so cool My one was imported from japan. From Japan
thats cool, how much was it in yen, must be like £500 pounds, alot cheaper than an 86 for sure, plus is it worth getting an ae85 and making it into an ae86 (money wise) |

Elid Wrote:From Japan I didnt import it myself it was imported/registered in new zealand in June 1989. I bought it in 2004. I went for the ae85 because its cheaper than a ae86 and even if I did buy a ae86 I wouldnt be using any of the drivetrain, motor, gearbox etc so it would have been a waste. If i had a oringinal ae86 I would want to restore it to factory condition not turn it into a race car. banpei Wrote:mmm, as far as I can remember also Australia should be a 85-paradise. No, unless they where privately imported as far as Iam aware.. They had AE86 baged cars sold new there from 1983-1984, however they are not a ture ae86, they were sold with a 4AC motor, single cam, carbs, solid front discs, drum rear end. Only sold with levin style fronts and sprinter tail lights. robokill Wrote:Get me a AE85 i got plenty o parts to make it an ae86 ;-) about 3 times ;P From a Hilux of course Corolla Levin SR 1984 AE-85 (Project car) Corolla Runx Z 2002 (Runabout) |
