9.5mm lift camshafts with OEM followers... anyone?
Has anyone already ran 9.5mm camshafts with 300º duration on stock cam followers (overbucket shim)?
As I said in my "shim overbucket ghetto" post, after buying a pair of 298 degree duration and 9.35mm camshafts from Kent, I was trying to fit 1SZ-FE lifters and they aren't large enough to close the gap to spec. Kent are currently out of stock for followers. I was looking around in catcams.be website and only mention new followers on camshafts above 11mm. Does anyone know why? Best regards |

I run 9.2 cams with 264 duration, no problem revs up to 9000 rpm
298 cams have a slower ramp so they should be safer than 264s |

Many people say that the most lift you should go on stock "followers" is 8.1 mm. But I guess this guy has proived us wrong.

I've just arranged with Kent a trade for another set of camshafts. They'll grind new ones with a bigger base circle so that I can use 1SZ-FE lifters!

Anything over 8.1mm for lift isnt a good idea for overbucket shims. Thay can and will pop off if the ramp rate of the cam lobe is too great. Steve.....this is sparrrrrtan |

i'm using toda with 8,5mm lift and its revving to 8.8k on a standard block with standard shims no problems ..... , but I would say that's the limit .....

If you have an engine running anything near these specs you know what is possible. I think this is one of the many topics about the same. Cam timing have 2 diffrent things. Cam duration and the lift. Now there is a diffrence with the cam lift of the camshaft. (lets say 8.1) and the lift at TDC. the lift at TDC makes the shim dangerous. Bill had an engine with standard shims running 9.5 mm lift cams. And 288 duration. Its simple, the 4age 16V setup is stable but if you exceed RPM/duration cams/lift it results in error. Same goes for the pistons. There are no engines the same. So for safekeeping most 4age builders take 8mm as max others take 9mm as max lift on standard shims. If you wanne build a safe engine pull your conclusion from experiences of people on the forum. For some reason your engine fails its because of your own decision on setup. The best engines are being build because the first 10 have died. Remember that building an engine is difficult and because no engine is the same you cannot be 100% certain of what will happen if you apply it to a diffrent engine. So comming back to the issue, Do YOU think its safe to run 9.5mm lift cams with standard shims ? If you want to play with power in the car I would suggest going underbucket (yaris/vitz) simple because you have a stable setup for more!
