To be fair the early versions will produce about the same horsepower as the later spec DLI versions with the smallport.
With a big pulley both produce around 180bhp. The DLI smallport has a much, much better torque curve though, therein lies the difference. I used to have a fairly modded AE92 spec GZE in my old AW11 (was the first in the UK to have this engine back in 2001 in an AW11). Good intercooling is the key though as heatsoask is an issue as the roots blower is spinning a fair bit beyond it's operating range with a big pulley so generates a lot of heat. Much less of an issue in an AE86 though with a decent front mounted intercooler. 1985 Sprinter Trueno GT Apex 2013 GT86 Miltek Exhaust, Injen Induction. |
