Uhm..no...there is a 1cm thick rubber pipe coming from the valve covers going to the middle of the intake manifold. You need to pull this loose while the engine is running (I would the pull hose off on the manifold side).
Just put your thumb on it and see how much pressure it builds up. Also give it a bit of throttle (by pulling the throttle lever off course) and see if it blows out much smoke. If you get lots of pressure, and lots of smoke then you can be certain that some piston rings have broken. If it's not blowing hard from the ventilation hose then it's probably fine. The best 4AGE I have ever seen had almost no air blowing out of the PCV (crankcase ventilation) and ran smoothly and quitly at 500 rpm, so it is a pretty good indicator of the state of the engine.
