4agze > MA71 W5x gearbox > ae86 Diff - How?
Hi,
I am awaiting delivery of my 4agze engine to drop in my AE86. I am doing a gearbox conversion, a w5x gearbox from a MA71, that is no problem, as I already have bellhousing converter, so should bolt on fine. I am wondering though, how do I connect this gearbox to my AE86 diff? I have the supra and ae86 prop shaft, is there a bolt in solution here? The only thing I've been told is to cut the prop shaft and splice them together, which seems a bit extreme and unreliable to me, is there another way? how have others done it? |

thats the only way...not unreliable as long as you balance it. but you best find an old celica rear axle too then. the 86 one is weak.

Thats what I didn't want to hear, but if its the only way then I guess that's my only option!
Another question, while I'm here: What actually will need doing to the prop shafts?, I obviously need the supra half for gearbox, and ae86 half for diff, but where should the cut be made, and does it need to be shortened or anything as ae86 is not as long as a supra? Thanks! |

There are some companies specialised in making propshafts. They should know what to do. There are lots of ways to do it, but the easiest would be to take a single piece center section and have them mount the correct yokes onto the end. I think it should be possible to replace the toyota yokes with cheaper items while you're at it.

Try to find somewere front shaft from CE70 (diesel RWD corolla). It fits to W55-59 and is same length as AE86 front piece. I did it that way, just bolt on.

Xaerob,
I saw you are putting w-series tranny. Can you tell, please, me where from one can find a 4A to W5*-series decent bellhousing? Thanks! AE86 GTS '84 Red Top |

Bad_Dog Wrote:Xaerob, toycoolrolla sells them...last i heard was about 200gbp. you will have to get with him as this price was about a year ago. if you cant find the diesal prop...take the ends to a prop shop and have them use new metal in between and weld to yokes. if new yokes can be attained, do it. otherwise its not a big deal. thats the only proper way of doing it. |

OK, thanks very much for responses!
I guess new yokes and metal inbetween would be best, can even take advantage and swap to a single piece to give less loss in transmission, so more at the wheels. I do have the toyota yokes from both ends that could be used still, might make it easier and cheaper for a prop/machine shop. I doubt I can get a prop from CE70 to be honest, although that would be the most ideal thing. I got my bellhousing from Malaysia, it was 250GBP delivered, I'll pm you details |
