86 Corolla SR5 engine upgrade
My 86 Corolla SR5 has a 4A-C engine, i prefer having at least a 4A-GE engine. What will i have to do to swap engines? will it fit my transmission?

Hey Sniper,
The transmission is the same. However you need to think about the following things: - the rear axle of SR5 has no LSD and drum brakes, so you need to convert to disk brakes and get a GTS axle - engine obviously, but this means adjusting electrics aswell - fuel! SR5 is carbarator so you need to change your fuel system I'm no expert in this but TE71corolla has just done an SR5->GTS swap, one of the mates of Zax has also done so, and Aico is just starting the process (and I'm sure I've forgotten something). So should be some good info on it. Also check: http://www.club4ag.com/technical_main.htm for info on engine swaps for the hachiroku Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |

Thanks for the reply mux213, this is some good info. just wondering, the other day i found an old supra in the junk yard, im guessing it was a late 80 or 90 model. It had an in line 6 cyl turbo charged engine....would something like that fit in an AE86?

I think I have seen those conversions around indeed so it should be very possible, sounds like an awful lot of work though

That engine (7M-GTE, 3 liter, inline 6, 1 turbo (CT26)) is not a very reliable engine (it eats headgaskets, oil pressure problems and crankshaft bearing problems). A friend of mine has one, in the last few years that car had more time next to his house then on the road! It doesn't matter how you drive it (gently or hard) it always breakes down. WHat are some good alternatives to the 4AGE engine that has more hp that will fit in the AE86?
i have a dumb friend who thinks his 2002 or 03 Mazda Protege is the fastest thing ever, he's running a DOHC 4cyl 16v engine. I say he has about 120hp? I would love to prove how eak his car really is when i upgrade my engine. Sniper ----------------------------- 1986 Toyota Corolla SR5 1989 BMW 535i 1986 Volvo 740 GLE ----------------------------- |

Hey,
check this little "walkthrough+ for converting an SR5 Corolla to GTS: http://users.atw.hu/sutter/pics/other/11_SR5toGTS.pdf (2.9MB) It includes all the necessary things what you need to swap to a 4A-GE engine and more. SutteR |

If your target is only to beat that Protege - you can keep 4AC, do headworks, use 10.5:1CR and sidedraght carburators + tubular extractors - it's enough to achieve at least 100hp. Do some weight reduction to the Corolla and you will be more than competitive to 120hp Protege.
