AE86 booter
Does anyone know of any distributor relocation kits available? My first choice is to leave the firewall as it is and maintain oem reliability by using the stock ecu.
I'm not looking for outright power, more driveability (I'd like my kids to learn to drive it on track) Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk |

The most well known kit is by SQ Engineering:

I've also been looking into coil-over-plug solutions, but I'm reluctant to go full aftermarket ecu as I don't want to lose toyota reliability Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk |

I just remembered there was another (earlier) kit by SP-TEC. Links to that has dried up, but it seems to be a bit cheaper than the SQ Engineering version.
If you're not in a hurry you could ask Flo's if he has one or can get one in his next shipment. 1983 - AE86 Sprinter Trueno - import project 2013 - Honda Civic sport - daily driver 2004 - AEU86 dot ORG - daily domain Support our forum, buy from the AEU86 shop: |

I've also been looking into coil-over-plug solutions, but I'm reluctant to go full aftermarket ecu as I don't want to lose toyota reliability I would say the following: Coil on Plug I bought my 86 with a 20v swap using Yaris Coils and an OEM ECU and wasted spark setup. It was NEVER reliable. The fact the car came with 4 spare COPs probably spoke for itself. It nuked an ECU and Coil/Ignitor pack. The only reliable way would be to go standalone to run the coils and probably run VAG coils as they seem to be the go-to for aftermarket. Relocated Distributor I later imported an SQ Engineering Dizi cap and relocate kit and (once I figured out the right lead lengths for Magnecor) it didn't have any spark breakdown or ignition issues after that point. OEM ECU, OEM Coil/Ignitor, OEM Distributor cap and Rotor. Yeah, it cost me on import but you might get lucky.[/b] |

Thanks @mad.matt , I'd heard that running coil over plug can work with the oem ecu, but that it's a bit hit-and-miss. Presumably it's prone to failure because it's batch firing all 4 plugs as opposed to alternating between 1-4 and 2-3, so it's firing each plug twice as often as it would with true wasted spark...
I've always liked the idea of retaining as much of the original set-up as possible for reliability as well for the "bang for buck", however as it's not going to be a daily driver, I'm leaning towards a standalone.... possibly Megasquirt.. Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk |

Regarding the Yaris coils, they are intended to run in full sequential which mean aftermarket ECU and at least alteration of the original wiring and a different CAS to get a signal for each cylinder. Then you shouldn't have issues.
I understand this is a lot of effort and money especially if the rest of the engine is nearly stock AE86 ex-daily |

Offside front pocket done...
Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk ... nearside pocket... Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk Made a form for the rear wheelarches... Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk Repairs to the front chassis leg and radiator support fitted Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk Front lamp panel zinc primered and fitted Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk Another few odd-jobs done that I'd been putting off: managed to get the headliner clean(er!).... I'm thinking of painting it black...remade the front outriggers in 1.5mm for added strength, and dimpled the engine bay gussets... Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk This had been bugging me, and I knew I had to deal with it before epoxy primering the engine bay Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk Also cut out and replaced another section of the firewall that had holes from old spot welds Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk Inner wing, firewall and strut tower ready for the 2k epoxy primer, used an infra red lamp to help cure it. This was Spraymaxx aerosols and came out really well! Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk Opposite side started, also started seam welding... Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk I removed the battery tray, I'll install the battery in the boot when the time comes... So below you can see the wheels, and I got the engine up off the floor. I'm not even going to think about the engine until I get the shell completed. The wheels are 16x8 iirc, so I need to get the chassis rolling before I tackle the wheelarches Sent from my ANE-LX1 using Tapatalk |
