American Rally 86 UPDATE
And some more. I made these little strengthener guys today
Excuse the crappy welds. I should have made them a bit longer, so they were kinda sitting recessed and didn't cooperate occasionally. Wow, I could have sworn I had an account here... I guess I'm the new guy |

American Rally 86 UPDATE
n1 work. small tip. reinforce the 4 link connection points from the chassis. Good option it to connect them to the cage. because in a couple years it will show wear and tear because its a stress point.

Yeah, I agree with reinforcing the mounts some more, I've been working on a way that doesnt involve more tube notching, hahaha, but I probably will hook it up to the cage. Definitely good advice! American Rally 86 UPDATE
Fantastic build log, thanks for sharing it!
In my experience, the car invariably ends up navigator side down, and the driver falls on the navigator when he unclips his harness. Guess who the navigator was...... |

American Rally 86 UPDATE
Hi, I guess you are the same person who asked some questions on the British Rally Forum. I will assume for now....
Reading through your post I would say your suspension is too stiff, for gravel I run also a 40mm inverted front Bilstein but the rating is 300/70 springs are large diameter (i.e not 2.25") 190lb. On the back I have 140lb springs with Bilsteins, not sure of the rating though. Standard height front/rear. I have tried stiffer front springs but I keep going back to the 190's I would say you are somewhere between gravel and smooth tarmac at the moment. Gearbox etc. I have a Quaife Type 9 fitted and it has "rally" ratios 2.39 1st etc. should you decide to go the close ratio route you will definately need a lower final drive and I would say something like a 5.1-1 would be ideal. You might want to try the standard 'box with a lower final drive, I think it would be a pretty good compromise. As far as bellhousings go for the Type 9 the only one worth considering is one made by RM Sport and, as luck would have it there is one for sale on *bay (uk) at the moment. They are very difficult to source. An analogue brain in a digital World |

American Rally 86 UPDATE
the standard t50 is horrible on gravel, even with a 5.1...the 1st is much much too short, think 3.5:1! By the time you have gotten any power down you already need to change gears. Something with say a 2.3/2.4:1 then the next 4 gears are very close to that, is much more ideal
Brake with the left hand, steer with the right foot... |
