Diff, bearings, or brakes?

Right, I have had this issue since I bought the car and have tried looking into what could be the problem. I have changed the diff oil and have checked to hear scraping sounds on the rear brakes, I also checked for play in the rear wheels, yet I cant figure out what this rubbing/scraping noise is.

The sound isn't a contstant scraping but something that can be heard over 20mph and sounds like it is only rubbing in one point. I am possibly putting it down to brakes due to the high pitch squealing that sometimes happens when pulling away in the morning and the slight vibrations in the brake pedal. Oh yeah and also, when pulling away in first gear it doesnt pull away smoothly when pulling out of a junction, more like it progresses up in a way that it fluctuates pausing slightly as if the rubbing is slowing the car down. Any ideas?

Did you check your rear discs for extra wear?
When I bought mine one of the discs was scraping on low speeds, especially when I touched the brake pedal lightly.

See if all the bolts are still straight and if your handbrake releases properly.
I lost one of the bolts holding the caliper once, and it just made weird vibrations during cornering. Whatever you do make sure you've done a visual check before you drive a lot with it. Wouldnt want the brakes to fail.

Well ive already done over a 1000 miles since buying it, and intend to do a 500 mile round trip to manchester, newcastle and then (on the way back) Japfest at the end of the month and that noise for that long will really annoy me.

I think I will take a look at the Brakes as suggested, I did jack the car up and spun both wheels and couldnt hear anything before, but may have to do a closer inspection. The rear squeals when cold and sometimes judders when braking so it seems the likely culprit

Warped discs mate!

I suspect the scrpaing noise goes away when you actually slow the car and the pads make contact with the disc.

Pulsating brake pedal is a sign of warped discs too.
