I will likely be getting that one for my car at some point (first I would need to recover from the annex coilovers tho). I think twin pipes are definitely the right move. I hope someone can help you with some photoshopped evidence of this statement Tongue

I just came across this video.
Thanks for finding that video! Thumbs up!
I did find a lot of videos with the Fujitsubo exhaust, but most of them are from under the car.
On this zenki Trueno the twin pipe looks great, so I think I'll go for that one as well! Hurray!

Excellent choice!

Even though this is 2.5"/63mm, doesn't seems to be too loud (no twin tip though)

Exhaust replacement
I measured the amount of noise my car makes using my phone 50cm diagonally from the exhaust.
It produces 85dB during cold start (1600rpm) and 84dB when warmed up (950rpm). Huh
I found there wasn't much difference between these two, which surprised me. I revved it up, but my phone can't register more than 88dB. I did three trials and at about 2500rpm it reached 88dB.
In case you're wondering about the high idle: aircon. Wink

When I compare that to this video, there is a lot more variation between idle and 2500 rpm:

That's 67dB at idle versus 85dB at 2500rpm on the Martelius exhaust. I'm wondering if my rear muffler is doing anything at all... Huh

There are 3 Fujitsubo exhausts for the AE86....

1) long muffler single outlet - https://www.fujitsubo.co.jp/products/detail/86

2) long muffler dual outlet - https://www.fujitsubo.co.jp/products/detail/88

3) short muffler dual outlet - https://www.fujitsubo.co.jp/products/detail/204

The long muffler versions are quieter... The short muffler version can get a bit loud (I've owned 2 of these the short muffler dual outlet, and the long muffler dual outlet)

I'm definitely going for the long muffler dual outlet. Now I just need to save up some cash or finally get the Carina sold. Wink

Exhaust replacement
I think I found a possible reason why my Tanabe exhaust is louder than it should be. I found a sales advertisement for the same Tanabe Hyper Medalion exhaust on a Russian site. This is a picture of the exhaust tip:

And this is a picture of my exhaust tip:

I've seen a similar thing on some of the other Japanese performance exhausts there is a funnel-shaped part that you can take out of the exhaust tip. For example, this Tanabe exhaust has such a funnel:

So I'm wondering that if my car is missing this funnel, could that be the reason why it's extremely loud? Or is it actually the other way around and the funnel bypasses the second silencer? Dumb question

Those funnels are an additional silencer. Many remove it as it also changes the tone of the exhaust.

Thanks for confirming that. I think a previous (Japanese) owner removed it and never put it back on the exhaust. Next time I'm at the garage I'll make better close-up photos of the exhaust tip.

Edit: In the meantime, I found out that the Tanabe Hyper Medalion was sold between 1995 and 2005-ish. After this, their website on Archive.org no longer lists it as their product. In previous posts, I listed the specs of, what I thought, the Hyper Medalion was. But it turns out they only sell the Touring Medalion nowadays and this is a totally different exhaust but you can still order it with a similar tip as mine. The Hyper lineup used to be between Exe (what is nowadays Touring) and Racing. I also didn't find an insert to be shown in the pictures of the Hyper Medalion. So my guess is that the exhaust is designed to be loud and just within the specs of Jasma (95dB).

My car wasn't registered for Shaken by the first owner between 2003 and 2011 and I don't think the first owner installed a high-performance exhaust. The second owner probably got some cool second-hand parts from Up-Garage and installed them on the car, including my worn-out TRD short shifter and this exhaust.

I also found this little gem on the Tanabe website in 2004:

So Tanabe is approved by the police! Cool

Exhaust replacement
I had a look and at first, I couldn't find a hole that's capable of mounting a funnel on. But then I found this on the side:
It looks like a spot where you can mount something on the exhaust tip.
I've sent the details (serial number, etc.) of my exhaust to Tanabe to ask if they have any information on it.

Whilst I'm busy with it, I've taken some photos of the exhaust system as a whole. The exhaust is an over-axle design and, except for the stainless mufflers, appears to be mild steel:

The exhaust system appears to be in a very good condition and I didn't see a whole lot of rust on it.
