mo-racing: we posted at the same time, so thanks for the info. I hope somebody can tell me a bit more! As for the TVIS, it's out simply because the new ECU cannot handle it.
So anybody know more about clutch disks? |

Smallport 140hp. See here for details. It's the AE92 (90-91) model with higher compression (10.3).

*These figures are not actual power ratings but ones posted in catalogs at the time of sale. On most 4A-GE engines, the power output was actually significantly lower than as stated in brochures distributed in Japan.

1. Are the red top engines better then blue top? 2. Do they make more powert then blue top? what is your opinion. Drifting - best fun you can have in your car with your pants on! |

It's a matter of preference. Smallport will make more hp, bigport more torque. I have only driven the bigport so far, so I don't really have an opinion. I'll tell you when I finish breaking in my new engine
However, according to billzilla, the bluetop is more suitable for high hp (200+) engines, as the smaller ports may be better up to that mark (higher airflow velocity - Bernoulli effect??), but the smaller ports pose an obstacle for that kind of power. But that's just me reproducing what I've read. :wink: |

Actually I just copied that remark off the bottom of the page that dorito linked to. Undoubtedly it is very true since manufacturer always exagurates power figures.
I think smalltop is probably the better engine in stock form. Has better low end torque than bluetop for sure due to higher compression ratio. I dont care much about the differences anyway. Both can be tuned nicely with similar means, I wouldnt install a smallport as an upgrade, only as a replacement. When looking for power I prefer to turn to 20v or GZE, I like the idea of stock reliability (though I still consider turboing an old bluetop for shits and giggles one day).. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

Agree on:
- diference in performance of two is very small - smallport only as replacement, it's not worth upgrading from bigport Also Redtop features over bluetop: - stronger block, - oil squirters, - better pistons (also heavy, so revs-up bit slover), - 2mm bigger crankshaft, so bit more reliable - better oil pump then bluetop (toyota now sells only new ae92 oil pumps) Not agree - looking for big power in 20v. 16v makes more/same power, but cheaper Also from my small experience, jap ae86 tuners always use ae92 small port as basis for hi-performance tuning. Making power over 200hp is not problem for small port engine when using ITB/carb setup. Also it's easier to port small ports to bigger. I have ae86 club VCD's and almost all of the hyper tuned N2 cars use small port 7 rib block, or gze block. It's just my thinking. I'm not experienced in tuning of 4a-ge so i might be very wrong. Drifting - best fun you can have in your car with your pants on! |

I never said you would find big power in a stock 20v, but if you find one cheaply, which is more likely than finding a GZE cheaply, then I think it's a worthwile upgrade for the increase in performance and nice ITB sound/behaviour. You get OEM reliability as well, so nice if you dont want to tune it further.
People use the smallport because of the stronger block and internals..my guess is that the oil squirters are an advantage at managing temperatures in the engine to avoid detonation. For less extreme tuning I expect bluetop will perform fine as long as it is built up with correct parts and clearances. BTW, my current red/blacktop TVIS engine from ae92 also has the bigger crank and rod. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

Hmmz nice engien :-) what does the mechanic want for the 20V head with todat stuff i know a block to fit it :-)
Regarding off topic 4age blueto pis more revvy because the wheight of the (i have to say this correctly) stroker crank being difrence of 40mm and 42 mm of the redtop this is fully logical if you think about it.
