Is this diff whine and r&p or drive shaft bearing proble
Oli,
Did you have any expert look at it yet.. Most of us are still living with unsolved diff problems as is Weird though having junk in your oil container to start with, would get pissed at the guy who sold me the oil... Anyways, replacing the whole lot seems overdone but somehow might be the best way to go. Still I think you really might wanne go out to someone who knows his stuff and put up a proper diagnosis and tell you what to replace. It most likely is either a bearing or the R&P and those are expensive fixes to do and then figure out they don't solve your problem... Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |

Is this diff whine and r&p or drive shaft bearing proble
Hi Oli,
Dont loose heart feller! How bad is the noise now, I presume you can still drive the car? Sounds like the expensive bits like your diff and R&P are all fine and not chewing themselves apart. So forget about looking in those areas for problems as you may be over looking whats really going wrong. Have you done the checks to rule out the rear wheel bearings? http://www.eight-six.co.uk - read the blog! UK AE86 Forum - http://www.phpbber.com/phpbb/index.php?m...ghtsixcouk |

Is this diff whine and r&p or drive shaft bearing proble
just a quick update.
Had another garage outfit take a look/drive and they feel its a bearing problem and put their money on a rear wheel bearing or a diff carrier bearing. I looked into getting some zenki halfshafts with good used bearing and a 2way or new bearings etc so have been asking around. Wanting a second opinion I asked a corolla gt owner and toyota guy to come and look and diff her out. the car is zenki hachi with lsd but rear drums etc and been looking around....but.. basically the cars chassis number says it has an open diff (after market lsd according to the auction sheet) so completely gutted I looked around for what I could do. kouki rear axle? buy a zenki lsd bits? anyway Bro B turned up and gave her a diffing and he too agrees looking at the rear wheel bearings would be the most likely candidate and also that it does have a slipper maybe a 1 way or weak 1.5way he thinks but we can find this out when the halfshafts are pulled to replace the bearings and go from there. so the auction sheet was right and makes sense as it said aftermarket lsd Anyway until I pull the shafts out I dont know whether I have kouki shafts?zenki lsd shafts or modded zenki non lsd shafts? Hence why all the people I spoke to have been put on hold until I know wtf I have. (MAX and WILL - sorry guys) Cheers to Black Betty too.... Hope this gets sorted soon as I'm waiting for bearings to arrive to get this sorted. OUT. |

Is this diff whine and r&p or drive shaft bearing proble
Hi,
if your rear end is from an SR5 take care of buying a normal LSD for the GT because the diff housing is smaller on the SR5. The normal GT LSD doesn't fit into the SR rear axle. Maybe everyone know this, maybe it helps preventing some anger. |

Is this diff whine and r&p or drive shaft bearing proble
Okay...dug this old topic up again, because I'm also starting to hear some louder noise from the back .
It used to sound like some soft chirping/very light screeching metal at specific intervals depending on the speed I am driving. Sometimes you hear nothing...and after making some turns it comes back. I thought it was just a worn out LSD and small noise isn't a big matter. So a few months ago, i changed my diff oil. Drove it and yay no more sounds! But when i came back from my holiday...the noise got worse! I hear a big Howl when i make a left turn !! Its not that annoying for me...but for the other passengers...lol. When i am driving and i make a left turn...they look around, check the back..."what's that noise??" And thats also the question for you guys, hope you can shed some light ! Also my cars clutch/gearbox also makes minor noises. If I stand still with 1st gear(sometimes also in N) and clutch pushed in, some grinding noise is produced, i suspect that is a sticky clutch?? I think this irrelevant for the backend noise...but just in case! An '86 86 driver Zenki AE86 Levin coupe |

kfm,
If you hear only noice when turning it can be the gears inside the LSD but it can also be one of the wheel bearings. Since its only sound when you turn in one direction I'm guessing wheel bearings but I aint no expert so i could be dead wrong Your gearbox noice is most likely your throwout bearing (allthough normally that sound you hear when you are in neutral and release the clutch, and goes away when you press the clutch, so could be wrong there). My guess would be wheel bearings too...check the right side one for starters.

Thanks for the fast replies!
Must change them asap then. Think i need to go to Toyota or local garage then. Dont want to loose a wheel when driving . How much do i have to spend on those bearings? (As for the gearbox, its not a problem to fix right away, is it?) An '86 86 driver Zenki AE86 Levin coupe |

joao mentioned he got some wheel bearings for 25E, but then in portugal
if the gearbox is throwoutbearing it won't be something you need to hurry but if you stop buy a garage anyway might aswell let a mechanic have a listen to be sure.. Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |
