Oil Coolers
I know the UK spec Levins come with oil coolers as standard, as I'm sure the jap ones do as well.

however, my car doesnt have one which is surprising considering the rest of the spec.

I've spoken to a few people in the know, and it has been mentioned that the oil pump on the 4age is a weak spot. if my car is not running a cooler, adding one will increase the strain on the oil pump, eventually leading to bottom end probs.

Only problem is, being a 4agze more heat is generated and I'm running oil temps of between 95 - 120 degrees and more often between 110 - 120 degrees.

I would rather have it in the 70 - 100 degrees area.

What are other peoples opinions on this? I'm gonna have more discussions tomorrow when I take my car to Julian Smith in Watford to have a few bits done.

Cheers

Si

Hi Simon,

I too would like an upgraded oil cooler for the car.

I think alex (CorollaRWD) mentioned that Trust/Greddy to a nice cooler kit for them that also relocates the oil filter onto the nearside suspension turret.

People have also mentioned that demon tweaks do a kit that is basically a sandwitch plate, some lines and a bigger cooler. Dunno how good this is.

If a job is worth doing its worth doing properly so let us know what u decide.

Regards Ian.

As I recall only the old 124/121 hp 4AGE came with an oil cooler, the following 16Vs didnt...

Why would the oil pump have problems if you installed an oil cooler?? Almost all 4age powered E8 corolla's have those coolers over here.
If I remember correctly the smallport engines have a better design oil pump that are also more reliable than the older type. I also remember someone mentioning that these are now the standard replacement item, so if you order a new oil pump, you should be pretty safe. I think the oil filter adapter and sump of a 4age with oilcooler are all you need to install it. You could also just make a return plug yourself.

yeah having discussed it more today with Julian at WMS, the oil system on a normal 4age is fine but on the 4agze the oil pump is under more strain.

However, it seems the only solution is to go for an aftermarket kit.

And by the way, I have good contacts with the guys at Think Automotive (Mocal distributors) so I can get my kit designed and sorted by them.

So hopefully within the next few weeks I will have it sorted out.

Cheers

Simon,

That would be good.

I was toying with buying an appropriate row Mocal cooler and buying all the shiney aeroquip red/blue unions and sandwich plate etc.

We did this with the dry sump system we ran on our Hayabusa motor.

If Think can help you sort the right bits for the kit could be interested.

Are you going to remote mount the oil filter ?

Its probably worth looking at the cost of the Greddy kit as the aeroquip unions can be quite expensive (one large # ones in the photo above were nearly £40 each :o )

ThinkAuto Mocal stuff is as good as any.

Si, you NEEEEEED a cooler on your GZE, without doubt, VERY important.

I will be doing a large 19 row Mocal on my 20v soon.

Keep the lines as short and straight as possible. If your pump is tired (low-ish oil pressure?) then get a new one.

Fix the cooler to the front of the rad and run the oil up through the cooler and out the top.

Well I can get good prices from Mocal, cheaper than retail so when I go there to measure up for mine I will let you know the prices

The normal size for the upgrade should be a 13 row, but I'm gonna go with a slimmer one, maybe 9 row, and the shortest pipe run possible, so there is the least strain.

And I'm not going for the remote filter, the standard one can be got to easy enough and it just makes for more piping as well.

normally with the discounts I get it works out to about £100 - 120 for the kit including the stainless braided pipes and connectors. For the relocation kit it works out a bit more than that.

I will try to find out for you.

my oil pressure is perfectly fine right now but i dont want to increase the chances of knackering it.

However the constant high oil temps will prob make thingsa worse anyway !
