Oil temps on trackdays?
Hi all,

Could I ask what oil temperatures people are seeing on trackdays (reckon drifting would give higher temps). I'd be especially interested people's oil temps who haven't got a cooler (JDM cars only). But, I'd also like to hear what temps those that have oil coolers get both stock and aftermarket.

The story is I'm taking my Trueno (no oil cooler) on a trackday at Anglesey on Saturday. Despite all our best efforts we don't think we are going to get the oil cooler fitted in time. Cooler is mounted, necessary holes made for lines and all that, but there is a bit of an issue with space for the cooler lines around the sandwich plate. They will have to run towards the back of the engine over the starter and underneath the exhaust.

We are going to put a thermocouple into a new sump plug so we can measure temperature.

With the stock oil cooler I have seen 140 degrees celsius at the Nürburgring. And this is at "high" speed and a lot of cooling!

I suggest that you don't go out for more than ten minutes before letting it cool down.

Sarcasme is just one of the things I offer Wink

Thanks for that Jan.

Looks like we are pressing on to get this oil cooler fitted. So hopefully we'll be okay. To be fair I generally only go out on track for around ten minutes at a time as I really don't like long sessions.

Though the Ring is fast, there is a lot of gradient and I can imagine the temp going up all the way from Ex Muhle to the Karussel given the incline!

does the AE86 has stock ducting between the front bumper and the coolers (oil and water)? hence with the restoration of mine i saw yersterday that there is no ducting at my oilcooler so air takes the easiest route -> around the oil cooler instead of through the cooler.
so my guess is making a duct to force the air through the cooler will help a lot.

There is no ducting for the oilcooler on a stock AE86, you can also put a fan behind it, will be much more effective. Tongue

we will see, i'm making a duct AND placing a fan in front of the cooler to cool it when standing still.

Perhaps a good addition to this thread for the people that don't have temp gauges: http://www.tqc.eu/en/products/article/35...N-STICKERS

These are temperature indication stickers that you can put on your sump/gearbox/diff etc to see what temp they reach on a track day.
