What engine do I want in my AE86?
A company is giving me an engine of my choice, and all I know is "Black Top". But they want more specific, what do I tell them?
My car (as you might know) if that has any to do with it is a Toyota Sprinter GT-Apex Trueno AE86 1986 Panda. http://www.garaget.org/?car=226294 This is how it looks like today, the conversion is already made to Red Top so it shouldnt be any problems putting a Black Top in there, right? Btw, what is the price of a Black Top? Regards Håkan AE86 SWEDEN https://www.facebook.com/ae86sweden |

Are they installing* it for free as well? * - installing = remove old one, install new one,WITH all the electronics for it to run PROPERLY. You tell them you want the car to run properly after the swap is finished.... Blacktop costs depend on how much YOU decide to pay for one. They range from $500-$2000 Dan - You can | .... Tell them you want a Formula Atlantic 4ag
Or for something a bit more tame get the Tsuchiya Spec 20v that's built by Tec-Arts http://www.tecarts.com/tuning/tsuchiya/index.html 1985 Corolla Gt-s Coupe |

What engine do I want in my AE86?
Thanks for answer.
First, Yes, the company will run the engine in bench/dyno to make sure their reputation is not damaged, since its a sponsor thing. Hence my question about installation, my car is already running Red Top (from fwd corolla GTI) so it should be easy putting in a Black Top? I think their budget is about 2000 Euro for an engine in this sponsor deal. A Tec-Art engine for 20000 Euro is not realistic haha And YES haha since my car is THAT kind of car, why run anything else than 4AGE and not preserving the AE86 legacy? Like a 4AGZE just seem wrong in that car. And I already have a Skyline so Im not after a power monster. I want the 4AGE sound and history in my car. I dont want to run a racing engine, it has to be fairly cheap to maintain and be a daily-driver-car with a spin on the track day occasionaly. But if I want a Black Top, what do I tell them to buy when they contact their dealer in Japan? Any old Black Top will do? Any specific model? Year? A blacktop is not exactly plug and play, but it doesn't take a genius to do it either. There is MORE than enough information about this swap on this forum and all other ae86 forums for that matter. 5 minutes of googling should get you all the info you need.
AFAIK, there are no important differences among different year blacktop 4age's, just make sure you get a healthy one. Many of these engines come to europe in rather nasty condition, this is because they run relatively hot and have a tendency to gather oil residue when they don't get frequent oil changes. As far as my comment on why go blacktop goes: you never mentioned the 2000 dollar budget. To be honest, that's even on the low side for a -good- blacktop install. It's a nice engine, but just a bit underwhelming for the cost involved.. that's why it wouldn't be my first choice if I was going to spend thousands of euro's. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |
