What rear diff to go with an engine upgrade?
Hi guys!
I am in a process of purchasing a CA18DET for my AE86. I know it's heavy and SR20 is way better and stuff, but for someone that wants to use about 200-220 BHP every day I think it will be just fine. I have stock rear with Tomei Technical Trax LSD, and I don't think that it can take that kind of power on everyday basis. I do not want a race car nor a drift car, I just want a faster everyday version of our usual AE86 all-rounder. Can the hilux diff be used on highways for hours? Can I strenghten this diff to take the power? What are my options? Thanks, Nenad |

CA18DET is as light as the SR20..maybe lighter, in total maybe 20kg heavier then 4AGE. Stock rear axle can handle the torque as long as you don't run wide slicks and drive like an idiot.

Great!
The best news I've heard so far! So all I need is to make a propshaft-adapter from CA18DET gearbox to the stock rear end. I think I will also rebuild the LSD since it will have about 40k km by then. |

Nothing at all. It has to do with 'Is that something I should be doing at all?', and me answering to myself. The question is in the second part of the post.
p.s. I didn't know it was only 20kg difference, I thought it was more because of the turbo, intercooler and piping.. Thanks for the good news again, NoHachi. |

Turbo intercooler etc do add more.. Just the long block is 20kg heavier. Its difficult to compare numbers including ancilleries..

Hmmmmmmm, I have a different concern then NoHachi.
The pinion gear uses a crush collar to maintain pressure on the pinion bearing. The crush collar can and does fail when high torque loads are run through the ring and pinion. The "fix", or repair for this is called a solid pinion spacer. This is a collar that is NOT crushable, but it is made to an exacting spec and shim able. This soild pinion spacer will allow you to add a preload to the pinion bearing, while not using a crushable collar Dan - You can | .... OR you can ask for help!!! +1 on the crush collar. In fact, renewing/refurbing anything "but" the LSD (like CWP, bearings etc) will probably be a better investment.

Well, I also bought a replacement ring&pinion from a claimed TRD diff on ebay. What does that 'crush collar' look like.. Any pics?
p.s. I have also changed _all_ bearings in the diff when I put in the Tomei LSD last year. |
