Where to find the informations on the gearbox/engine
If you ask me that does not look like a T series at all: not square and its got only two ribs.
It looks like the W55/58/59 which does only have two ribs:

I know Toyota installed some W59s in trucks, so perhaps that's where the gearbox came from. Smile

Not entirely true: a W55/56/57/58/59 gearbox should be compatible in its bellhousings, so if you want to drop in a 4AGE you can buy a 4A->W58 bellhousing and swap that for the 1C/2C bellhousing on your W59.
There are several sources for that bellhousing, but most of them are unfortunately located in Australia:

Well, it isn't entirely Toyota logic since Toyota isn't the manufacturer of those boxes. But basically what happens is that the gearbox is a loose component and the engine needs to be fitted to that. That's why there are different bellhousings which fit on certain gearboxes.

In case of the W series there are two generations of W gearboxes. The new series start at W55 and the bellhousings are not compatible with older series.

As stated before: the 3S fits on the 1C bellhousing. If you currently have a 2C engine fitting on the W59 gearbox it should fit the 3S engine since the 2C should have the same block as the 1C. I also see several resource around the world saying the 1C and 2C both fit.

Personally I would go for the 3SGTE. If you would put a 4AGE in there you only would be disappointed in the amount of time, money and effort you put into it and having less torque than the 2C diesel had.

Thanks for your reply Thumbs up!
I have to find out if the gearbox is really what it seams.
For the moment, the only engine i found in Malta is a 3SFE which might be the first step to go, or i will go for a complete MR2 in UK for swap.

Do you know if maybe some parts of the MR2 (chassis) would fit the TE ?

What is strange for me, it is not to find some special engine mount done especially for swap, like there are for Honda Sad
