Always aim for 16 degrees BTDC if you cant get into diagnostic mode.
Might be some wire break or something, or you're not getting good contact
between the diagnostic terminals.

Nurburgring ?
Have a good run and if you have not been there before the ''Pistenklause'' (sp) is a great little pub/ restaurant in the village.

To get the engine into diagnostic mode, you need...

- the engine at normal operating temperature.
- idle speed around 850 +/- rpm.
- all electrical accessories, A/c etc off.
- TPS idle switch closed (throttle butterfly all the way closed).
- battery voltage 11 volts or more.
- transmission in neutral (auto only).

You will know if the engine has gone into diagnotic mode, because the
rpm will drop and the advance showing on your timing light will change
by 5 or 6 deg. The reverse happens when you pull the jumper wire out.

Standard 4AGE seems to be tolerant of a few extra degrees of advance.
But if you have 11 deg and the engine did not go into diagnostic mode,
your timing is retarded by approx 5 deg. As said above, normal idle
timing without the jumper is 15-16 deg.

As I understand it, to check tps is closed on tickover. Bridge the terminals as normal and press the throttle pedal you should get code 11 when throttle is open and no code when it is closed.

well as said engine didn't go into diagnostic mode with all other parameters been catered for... anyway it's now set to ~16° at idle, although idle was a bit higher than usual - when I'm in switzerland at the end of june I'll check it again and set it to 16° spot on at 850rpm as it should be Smile

@totta: been to the ring a couple of times just went there for the afternoon (just a 2.5h drive away) - unfortunately the manifold to exhaust gasket went on the second lap (due to a missing nut) so I headed to the garage to fix it when i got back the track was closed for the day due to big accident involving 7 cars (2 of them friends of mine) - so overall quite a shit day track only beeing open for less than 2h and me beeing away 1h of that to fix my car and worst having friends involved in the crash, one of them beeing seriously hurt but I haven't heard more yet - just hope everything will be fine again.
