To get the engine into diagnostic mode, you need...

- the engine at normal operating temperature.
- idle speed around 850 +/- rpm.
- all electrical accessories, A/c etc off.
- TPS idle switch closed (throttle butterfly all the way closed).
- battery voltage 11 volts or more.
- transmission in neutral (auto only).

You will know if the engine has gone into diagnotic mode, because the
rpm will drop and the advance showing on your timing light will change
by 5 or 6 deg. The reverse happens when you pull the jumper wire out.

Standard 4AGE seems to be tolerant of a few extra degrees of advance.
But if you have 11 deg and the engine did not go into diagnostic mode,
your timing is retarded by approx 5 deg. As said above, normal idle
timing without the jumper is 15-16 deg.
