How bad is the whine ? Do pedestrians look round expecting
to see a fire engine as you approach ? If the gears look good (no excessive wear or pitting) and the contact patch and backlash have been set correctly, then the noise is annoying, but not a sign that the diff is going to fail. Try using a heavier weight specialist diff oil. Sometimes that will reduce the noise, and sometimes the noise will improve as the parts wear into eack other.
