I NEVER see any AE86s in the junkyard, ive seen 2 AE92s with FWD 4AGEs, dont know if they would work but they were all screwed up because the hoods were up and it rained

Yes. The blocks even are the same P/N :-)
But internals are different.

The AE92's 4AGE is even better than AE86's one. It will work (with some intake manifold changes, AE86 4AGE's header and crank pilot bearing - as minimal changes).

actually, i regulary see many AE92s but not with the 4AG engine...im going tomoorow, hopefully i see something good

According to this site only the GTS has the 4AG engine.

I know the AE92 with the 4AG engine had been sold in Holland as the Corolla GTI (not GTIs) and only as the hatchback version.

yes only gt-s have 4a-ge. but i have seen a gt model in usa. it was pretty much a sr-5 with a 4a-g. because the gt-s had all the features, like power windows, sunroof, etc. only for ae92 though.

sniper- if you get the engine from the 92, you still have a ways to go, you could always snag one for a spare...just keep looking for an 86. it will be better to swap what you need to, rather than searching aimlessly. oh i believe the 92 of usa only has bigport TVIS. no red top. the 92 has red on the valve covers but not the red of a RED top. be patient!!!

I got sent this link the other day, to a russian forum, where a guy has fitted a 2JZ-GTE VVT-i into an AE86, so yes you can, but not sure about the 'box
