Gearbox Oil .. ?!
What oil should I put in the gearbox...
For my car [AE82, 4A-GE] a guy told me to put half syntetic GL4 75w90 or 75w85.. I looked for that oil and I only found Valvoline Durablend and Motul Motylgear... and some people say that Valvoline is garbage.. What hapens if I put full syntetic.. there's a lot more those oils on the market... |

Gearbox Oil .. ?!
Hey Meshin,
This topic has been fully talked about in the oil thread a little bit further but just to answer your question quickly, Don't use GL5, it'll mess up your synchro's. Valvoline Durablend GL4 does the trick very nicely so I would put that in. Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |

Gearbox Oil .. ?!
I have read it completly but I put up a new topic because I don't think that gearbox in AE86 and AE82 are the same...
and in that topic nobody said enough about half-synt and full-synt differences for gearbox... |

ah right, sorry missed that part about the ae82.. hmm sorry dont know but on the valvoline site you can find your car and see what oil they recommend. I'm not sure if you should trust it through cause for our 86s it sais GL5.
My guess is GL4 is a safe choice though. Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |

hey meshin. as far as i can trust the oil technican i talked to (i think he knows what hes talking about) there is no "semi-synthetic".
mineral oil has one viscosity. any oil that has an viscosity range is synthetic. if you have no lsd (in the gearbox ) you can use nearly every oil. its similar to petrol. many brands and even more different names but its all the same more or less. .... besides ... we are talking about gearboxes for 130hp so dont worry to much |

Quote:mineral oil has one viscosity. any oil that has an viscosity range is synthetic.I don't think so. The viscosity range is not related to the "% of synth" of oil only. |

look. what i sayed is just the first explaination that sounds logical i heard of in the last 10 years. i have no idea about chemistry! it was just a general explanation from professional to user (me).
you can also look at other toyota drivers. they use 3,- eur supermarket oil as well as 20,-eur 0W-30 .... main thing is to change the oil in time!!! |

Just clearing the case:
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/oil_viscosity.html And one general rule (maybe wrong ?): As "VI additive" is not lubricant - the less is better. That means - if you can use 10W30, avoid using 10W40 because the additive is more than in 10W30 and lubrication can be worse. |
