why dont you just install a new management system........OEM ECU's are never meant to control specifications that are not stock, and nobody would expect them too.

Speak to Rob at http://www.vems.co.uk/vems.html as he does complete setups for ae86's.

I had my ECU modifyed to 8800 rpm, a guy here in Denmark did that. But i actually dont think its nessasary, i talked with a guy who ran 279 degree cams, Apexi S-afc and a raised limiter in stock ECU. He told me, that the car pulled strong to approx. 7700-7800 rpm where the stock limiter is, and after that slowly died out. So if i where you, i would try running the stock limiter first, and if you think it needs a higher limit, contact me and i can get your limiter raised.

Knudsen, I know that it is possible to overclock the ECU by changing a crystal. But I've also heard that changing that crystal will change a lot of other ECU's parameters.

BenR, what are the VEMS capabilities and how hard it is to install it?

And how much power do you guys think I can get out of this setup ?

Thanks a lot

I cant see why the crystal thats controlling the rev. limiter should change other parameters. My car runs fine on a modded ECU, so does several others.

Knudsen, as far as I know, that crystal is not controling the rev limiter only. But I'm not an expert. Anyway, I would like to be in touch with the ECU tweaking dude Smile.

Best regards

VEMS is a very capable and well priced ECU system, just have a look at the website and contact Rob, he will explain.

I dont see a point in messing around with the OEM ecu, if the solution was good.......everybody would do it and know how to do it......but they dont.

I always see home engine builders spend all their money on parts, then when it comes to mapping, always go the cheap and shit route, which makes the car crap as the final touch is always in the mapping.

I think I'll buy a Megasquirt unit before even thinking of VEMS since my friend "gon" has already assembled one in his car. Megasquirt is cheaper and does the exact same thing, if not more. The big question is wether I need a standalone. I think I'll buy a second hand piggy back, check the results on a dyno and if it isn't enough, I'll go standalone.

Best regards

I suggest you to go with a Megasquirt system wich is fully programable. Oh i also have a question, since 264deg camshaft are near the factory ECU maximum rpm can someone explain me why the factory ECU can't work on this setup!!? Some poeple forget than the factory ECU redline was 7400rpm and the setup 264deg\264deg(I dont know the lift wich is important but...) will push the powerband near the redline!!! So the factory ECU should perfectly this setup. The OEM 4age camshaft powerband push the limit to near 6600rpm,256deg in the lower 7k and so on...So if we check it the stock ECU can take it, the only problem like someone have said reside in ignition so just change it! I think the thing reside in ignition and timing but if you want a quick and perfect solution i suggest Megasquirt and with it you will be able to change your cam settings without worrying about the ECU, you will have to change your ignition, for the 264deg+MS i suggest EDIS4+trigger wheel wich is available in Ford Escort(dont remember wich year) and for more high powerband MSD digital6.

Hope i have help, correct me if im wrong!!

Ugo

I could, but none of us would gain any knowledge by that - the crystal isnt marked with any values of any kind. Confused
