It has been done before and we even had a forum member who simply swapped a 4A-GE head on to a 3A-U bottom, making it a 1.5 litre 3A-GE. But that was a lot of effort for little gain.
The procedure should be mostly the same as for the SR5 to GT-S swap (4A-C to 4A-GE) as described by Assassin10000, with the difference that the AE85 has a K50 gearbox instead of a T50 gearbox. The SR5 has the T50, but is clutch operated instead of hydraulic, hence you need the 4A-GE bellhousing. Your rear axle is also a different axle (S302/S312/S314) than the AE86 (most of them are T283). You can keep the S axle, but it's harder to find a LSD for it. If you can live with an open diff it shouldn't be an issue. 1983 - AE86 Sprinter Trueno - import project 2013 - Honda Civic sport - daily driver 2004 - AEU86 dot ORG - daily domain Support our forum, buy from the AEU86 shop: |

Do you wish to retain the automatic gearbox? If not you also need to swap the radiator as this is commonly used for cooling both the engine and gearbox.

I'm going to switch to a manual gearbox. changing the hoses does not keep the radiator?

I have the A40 automatic transmission on my Carina and the A42DL that's in the AE85/AE86 is a similar gearbox. The Carina has a separate oil cooling for the gearbox at the underside of the radiator. But I couldn't find this for the AE85 in the diagrams. so it could be that it is cooled differently...
Anyway, if it's the same as with the Carina the radiator has less capacity due to the oil cooling part. You can do without but your water temperature may get into the red zone quicker. 1983 - AE86 Sprinter Trueno - import project 2013 - Honda Civic sport - daily driver 2004 - AEU86 dot ORG - daily domain Support our forum, buy from the AEU86 shop: |
