The stock 4AGE oil cooler is the same as 4AF(E) and 3SGE one - just look at the salvage yards ! You can order the oil sender unit from Toyota dealer at ~30 EU brand new.

Hi,
sorry, if my English is not perfect... Today I wanted to replace the original oil cooler with a mocal unit, cause my rally car has after long stages a temperature of more than 140°C. I wanted to shortcut the original line, by just connecting the relief valve of the original adapter to the oil pan and use a sandwich plate, also by mocal, for the mainstream. But using this sandwich plate on the original adapter, I don´t have enough space for the oil filter, cause of the header. So my question is, if it is possible to fit the sandwich plate directly on the block and leave the adapter with the relief valve away? Or are there any reasons not to make it this way, for example to much pressure,etc.. I don´t know... raki |

The 4AGE has a relief valve built into the oil pump to prevent the oil
pressure becoming too high during high rpm operation. The factory oil cooler is a bypass type with its own relief valve. At low rpm the oil cooler relief valve is closed, and no oil goes to the cooler. At high rpm the oil flow increases, the pressure rises and the relief valve opens. Excess oil flows thru the cooler and returns to the sump. An after market full-flow oil cooler will be more effective. A new sandwich plate that returns all the oil from the cooler to the engine will be required. Remove the factory plate and block off the return to the sump. Most of the people I know built the aftermarket sandwich plate on the factory plate and just took a line from the factory plate to the oil pan, so they have a full-flow system and the relief valve, but it´s not possible with my exhaust system. I'm about to install a mocal thermostatic remote filter setup I got from Think Automotive. They were very good and extremely helpful. You can get some fancy rubber type aeroquip hose from them which does not need swaging and enables simple fitment at home.
The real cost comes with the various threaded fittings you require on top of the cost of the cooler and assorted adaptor plates. I am fitting a straight out adaptor on the block with a remote filter mount installed just behind and low down to the battery tray with a home made alloy bracket to locate it. This remote filter mount then has a thermostatic plate attached to it. Then out to the setrab cooler. Think automotive's website is extremely informative. |

In this country the AE86 was sold without an oil cooler. AFAIK the factory cooler was only fitted to cars shipped to countries with hot summers ![]() there is no problem in running the car without the factory bypass fitting. @parrot Makes good sense to mount the oil filter remotely if you are going to the trouble of upgrading the cooler. They are not the easiest item to service in the stock location !!! I'm not certain why the factory installs a relief valve at the pump, but would guess it is to protect the pump from excessive pressure/damage when the oil is cold. The relief valve at the filter only opens at high rpm, which is when the engine is working hard and generating more heat. A simple way of only using the cooler when necessary. Modified engines, stock engines used for racing, vehicles towing loads or running in high ambient conditions, will all benefit from improved cooling. In some cases this will include differential and transmission coolers as well as oil coolers and larger radiators. Okay,
but without the factory plate, the pipe with the winding which is screwed in the block, doesn´t fit to fix the sandwichplate. It´s too long and I don´t find a way to fix it, except of cutting the pipe and making another winding, which is a problem.. Can I maybe use the pipe of a model without factory cooler? raki P.S.: So there are definately 2 relief valves? one in the pump in one in the factory bypass? http://www.sg-rallyesport.de |
